session 3

9/26/02 Hey everyone, I'm going to session three, which, as most of you may know, is still in the future (one week+ now!), but I was wondering if, for their workshops, people ever bring and pass out photocopied refernce kind of stuff, or if that causes everyone else to think one an insufferable prig and over-eager geek, or something. I'm planning to do a workshop on vitamins, natural health care in general, and also natural muscle rehab and streching techniques (basically, I love all these topics and I'm open to taking the conversation where it goes, in any of many directions—although I'm slightly worried that no one will come because everyone already knows what they need in these topics?? Is everyone at camp so health-savvy that no one needs to hear a little more about the B vitamins or how to streach an overused wrist??). Anyway, I thought I might bring some photocopies of basic info, not a big deal, but I wasn't sure if that would be overkill—I'm just kind of insecure about this particlar area since I haven't done it before! Reply

Well, plenty of rambling for now! Rachel Reply

Hey, everybody! Thanks for all your comments! This sounds really great. I'll make some photocopies then—I've got some cool info on a variety of stuff! Emily—yes, I can definitely show you show you wrist stretches and other stuff. I'll bring copies of that info too. It'd be great to have you there! :) Reply

I'm hoping to put on an improv workshop at session three. I absolutly love doing improv workshops, they just totally rock. Would anyone be interested in taking it? It would just be a really silly/crazy workshop, just the way improv is supposed to be. hehe Then maybe, if anyone takes it, we could think about doing an improv thing for the talent show. Just a thought. :O) -Corinne Reply

Well, I'm definitely signed up to run the hip-hop workshop once again, which is always mucho fun for me. Come on down and bring yer dancin feet (and don't worry about looking white; I am lily pale, and still have a kickass time attempting to get down). Things I haven't officially slated, but probably/most likely will do are: an improv acting workshop (potentially blossoming into a week-long improv group capable of performing at the final talent show?), and a girl's-only orgasm/sex discussion (potentially blossoming into a mixed-gender discussion...? This is based off of a long conversation I had with another camper, and I'm pretty sure that other people would have some interesting thoughts). And that's about all for lil' old me. -—Maggie Reply

There's an extremely good chance I'm going to change my stream-of-consciousness workshop to a zine workshop. I'm not positive yet, I'll see when I get to camp (session 2). I'm bringing a bunch of zines out with me. I'll just see what the response is. If anyone else reading this is into zines, and wants to help me, let me know, I'd definitely appreciate it.-eira Reply

At both session one and two I'll be leading a Song Writers Workshop and
    Guitar/Song Circle.
The song writers workshop will be basically for discussing song writing
techniques and stuff like that. How do you come up with the music? How do
you come up with the lyrics? What inspires you? Stuff like that so we can
help each other come up with new approaches to writing songs. While my
experiance is only with rock guitar style song writing ... anyone who writes
songs of any kind is welcome. Whether you play piano, guitar, fiddle, just
sing or whatever. Whether you write with lyrics or without. Hell, even if
you don't write songs yet and are just thinking about it ... come!
The guitar/song circle is basically going to just be ... everyone in a
circle, taking turns playing a song they've written. No discussion ... just
a sharing experiance. Should be rad.
At session 1 I'm going to talk to Susannah Scott about possibly doing a West
Coast Swing workshop with me. I've seen lots of swing workshops at camp
before but never West Coast. I don't know much myself but I do know enough
to teach the basic stuff ... plus, teaching is the best way to learn.
At session 2 myself and Sarah Tobey will be doing a music jam. Any type of
instrument you want to play ... bring! Don't play an instrument? Come sing.
    It'll be fun!
I'm also hoping to get one of the Lester brothers or Anna involved in doing
a 'Starting a Band' workshop at some point. I'm in the process of starting a
band myself and I'd really like to talk to people about what's good to do
... how to go about it ... stuff like that ... and share a few things I've
learnt (Either from doing it before in the past or talking to/observing
    others).
I'm really excited about all of these so I hope some of ya'll will show up,
and I'm definately going to be attending lots of workshops myself this year.
Yay! Whoo! See (some of) you there!

—Zen *Zen, I think my brother (a new camper and a kickass bass player) would love a workshop on starting a band, if you need any extra reasons to go for it. —AlexG Reply

I'm doing a workshop on american sign language. I'm trying to make up these packets to pass out, and at the moment I'm only makeing 15 copies of them, but I think I'm being optimistic. Does anyone actually want to come? Session three. -Emily S. Reply

I am going to be doing a Hair Cutting Workshop for either or both session 1 and 2. I've been cutting hair for 9 years and I absolutely love it! So- Basically what this workshop would be is a chance to get a free haircut by a skilled cutter =) As well- if you are interested in hair cutting you can come and watch me for technique and styles..etc.. Getting your hair cut if fun! So- come! yay! -Abbi Reply

session 2 and 3

I did a somewhat impromptu stream of consciousness writing workshop at session 2 last year, and it seemed to go fairly well. I think I'll do one at session 2 again this year, and maybe session 3. I'd also love to see another 'zine workshop this year, and if anyone would like to co-lead one with me, I'd be up for it. I can bring some 'zines with me. I think it'd be fun to have a list workshop too, where people who love making lists can make random lists we all share with each other. Lists like things you can talk about with random people, 30 uses for those CD's America Online sends you, 10 movies to watch with unschoolerish themes, etc etc. -eira Reply

Eira, all of your session ideas sound wonderful. I don't have any experience in zines, but would love to learn. Stream of consciousness writing is great, and the list one sounds like a lot of fun. LOL. I was thinking of doing a session for some sort of craft, but that might get complicated, bringing supplies. I was thinking of paper art (I do cut paper work—free cutting more than folded work, but both) and also knitting. Dunno if anyone's interested. I also liked the idea of a dancing session—just free dancing, or modern dancing, if anyone's interested. I do modern, jazz, and especially improv dancing. And I love improv acting; that might be a cool session. But I've never been to camp, so I don't know what interests others.... —Elizabeth Reply

Eira- Ohh! I am a list -fanatic!!!!!! I will soo be at your workshop yay! Reply

I'm going to do a hair dyeing workshop. I'll probably do it at first session, and depending on whether or not I have enough dye/bleach left, I'll do it at second as well. Reply

Also, will people come to my workshop? You could get your hair bleached, dyed, whatever. Also, I'm trying to think of what color dyes I should get. Reply

So far these are my ideas: Reply

Reply

And of course, lots of bleach. Reply

If you would like to come to my workshop, and have a certain color in mind, please tell me so I can get those colors. The ones with no maybe? written next to them are definately coming with me, but I want input on whether or not I should get the other colors. This workshop will probably just ask for a donation anywhere from $1 to $3 or whatever someone can spare (the dyes cost a good 7 bucks a piece, and the bleach is pretty expensive as well). Also if you want to bring dye to contribute, or bring your own dye to have someone dye your hair with, by all means do so. I will have lots and lots of latex-free rubber gloves with me, so don't worry about that. -Rachael Reply

Heres my list of possible workshops Ruth 1)If I can swing it I'm going to have a 'help me decorate my truck camper' workshop. I'm building a pop up camper for my truck and when it pops up it will have large nylon sides that I think ought to be decorated by a bunch of people at camp. Perhaps by painting them. We'll see if I can make it go. —Ruth this one will probably be at session 1. Reply

2)I might bring a bunch of Henna again as that always seems popular. —Ruth Reply

Reply

Ruth, I've got a bunch of henna stuff, too. Like, a ring binder full of designs and things, and I've got some oils that have worked really well in terms of curing the henna really well. I've got some Eucalyptus and Clove and some Cajeput, but the clove and cajeput are sort of pricey. Anyhow, I'll bring my powder and patterns and some oil with me, if you want me to. —Fiona Reply

ooh! yes bring designs and funness!!! I'd loooove some help with henna recipies etc. It's always 50/50 as to wether mine work or not. —Ruth Reply

M'kay. The oils themselves are sort of expensive, so would you be terribly against my asking people for, like, a buck if they're going to use 'em? One of the best recipies I've found so far has been this one: http://tattoo.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fmehndimyst.freeservers.com%2Frecipe.html, and it works even better if you pre-treat your skin with a little bit of eucalyptus or clove or cajeput oil. —Fiona Reply

Hey how does Jojoba oil work for that? I can make basic essential oils if you guys need them I can work on clove even though I've never made it before... -Zaria Reply

Jojoba.... I've never heard of that working. It has to be somewhat acidic is all I know. I'll do some research. I've basically only heard of eucalyptus, clove, and cajeput. Lemon oil, I've heard works a little bit, but the three main ones are eucalyptus and clove and cajeput. Cajeput isn't as common, though. I'll look up lemon. —Fiona Reply

The oils that work best are irritating and pore-opening on the skin, not soothing and waxy like jojoba. Jojoba is a liquid wax, whereas clove essential oil is caustic and pretty harsh... they're very different. Acidic isn't neccesary at all (though all oils are at least somewhat acidic), since most henna recipes call for the addition of an acid (lemon juice and tea (tannic acid) being the most common.) —Arianna Reply

3)I was thinking of doing a workshop on making reusable menstral pads. I've made a couple and I like to use them and I thought it might be a cool work shop. So let me know if you would be interested because I'll have to bring some fabric or have you bring it and all that will depend on how many people are interested. —Ruth Reply

4) I thought if I can swing it I might do a workshop on making lotions and lip balm and such. probbaly at session 2. Reply

session 3

I'll be at session 3 this year, my first camp year, and there are lots of things I could probably do a workshop in—maybe dance, or feminism/gender equality, or I dunno...journal writing...all kinds of stuff I have experience in, even my religion (Christianity), if anyone wanted that, and how that ties in for me with being liberal/alternative/etc (most mainstream Christians aren't really that liberal, I know). So let me know if any of those things sound cool! One thing that I just thought of the other night though, is that I could do a workshop on vitamins/supplements and what kinds of symptoms they can all help, because I know a TON about those! (I'm a total information junkie and have been known to read through our vitamin books for hours in the middle of the night.) Would anyone want to come to a workshop like that? I think I'd really have fun doing it, so if there's interest, I'd be more than willing! Or an alternate title could be: How the Big Bad Medical Establishment Pretends there aren't really cures for things! Ha ha. Reply

I don't really know anything about this. Does everyone have to do a workshop, or what if there are too many? Do they tell some people not to do them then? Do ya just show up and do yours and hope people come to it? Lookin' forward..! Reply

-RachelH, jun 11 Reply

Rachel- I'd love to go to a workshop on religion vs. stereotypes of it.... maybe it'd be good if you made it broader? Like, how your religion doesn't fit the general idea everyone else has of it? I'm in the same position, I consider myself to be a Christian, but I'm this huge liberal and I'm appalled at what the religious right has done to totally mess up Jesus' teachings. I'd love to go to a workshop that isn't necessarily just about christianity, but would encompass all kinds of religion and how you defy the general accepted ideas around it. Am I making sense at all? Reply

And about your question of does everyone *have* to lead a workshop? -absolutely not. And don't take it personally if no one shows up to a workshop, sometimes there are so many delectable workshops going on at the exact same time. You can always reschedule it or try doing a new one later in the week. And what happened at session 2 last year is sometimes during meetings, people who get up and say I'm doing a workshop on (topic here), and this is what we're going to do, who's interested? and if a lot of people showed interest, they'd go ahead and do it, otherwise they might decide not to do it if no one looks really enthusiastic. -eira Reply

Reply

Hey Rachel- most definitely I'm up for talking about that. There's always tons of time at camp to do spontaneous stuff, so you could always do a the politics of religion or something discussion group, and see how many people are interested. -eira Reply

...Do I have any takers on a vitamin and natural health workshop, or
does everyone know a lot about that already?? (I'll be at session 3)

I'm considering doing a self harm discussion workshop, both for people who self injure and for people who just want more information on self injurers and things like that. I'm just wondering if anyone would even be interested in that. What I guess I'm worried about is having enough self injurers who would be willing to talk about their experiences, and having enough people who want to talk about it and things like that. An equal balance, I guess. I'd want to keep it small, too, so it'll probably end up being one of the impromtu ones that gets added on in the middle of the week. Would anybody come to that? (it'd be at second session...) —Fiona Reply

I'll defenitly go. I'm not a self injurer but I know a fair bit about it. —Victor Reply

Okay... I'm going to do it, then. My papers sort of all got lost and shuffled around a bit what with the whole moving thing, but I'll just put myself into an empty slot on the first day. —Fiona Reply

I would would love to go and i'm pretty open to talking about it. But yes, just tell me then it would be and i'll be there. —Carolyn Reply

Rock on. I'll do it, then. —Fiona Reply

i'll definitely be there to listen, if that's okay with everyone. i've never hurt myself, but i'd like to come. i'll just hang by vic. hehe. -ali Reply

The most self injuring thing I do is my intense addiction to over the counter pain pills which I know is mere childs play in comparision but I would most deffinatly like to go to this workshop. -Zaria Reply

First, let me say that no form of self injury is child's play. If you're hurting yourself, you're hurting yourself, end of discussion. Glad you're interested in coming, though. I'll definitely do this. Probably in the chapel or by the fire circle or in the field over where the evergreen trees sort of make a nice shady, quiet spot. I'll just see what's open and do it. —Fiona Reply

I, Marina, am going to be doing a journaling workshop at sessions 1 and 2. Depending on interest, this could be something where we all share our journals, things to do with them, i.e. what you write in your journal (what you did that day, lists, poems, notes to yourself, only private things) what and whether you draw or collage or paste in ticket stubs and grocery recipts... just general getting ideas and sharing. I know a lot of NBTSCers have some damn cool looking journals, and I know that looking at other people's journals always inspires me. Reply

Or it may turn into just a space to journal with other people in Wellbeing Time every day. Or maybe both. Reply

Anyone interested? —Marina Reply

I (Amy) am going to be teaching a mask-making workshop at Session 2. I have plaster tape, which is really easy to use and a lot of fun to try out ideas with, and if people are at all interested I can bring some leather pieces and a model head, and we can experiment with making leather masks. I won't bring the leather unless someone specifically tells me they want to try that technique, though, because bringing along the head is too much trouble if no one's going to come. Reply

I will also have fabrics (velvet, satin, canvas, chiffon, cotton), trims (lace, braid, sequins, etc), and acrylic paints and supplies, along with random stuff like silver and gold powder, for decoration. (Not to mention glue and scissors and other basic crafty neccessities.) Reply

If you know more about masks than I do (because I admit, I'm far from being an expert), and want to come and share what you know, that would be fantastic. Or if you know nothing and want to learn, that's great too. Or if you just want fool around with the supplies, by all means, come hang out! I imagine this is going to be really informal, so if anyone has suggestions they want to make, I'm all ears. Reply
